New 230kV/26.4kV Mt. Pleasant Substation for JEA (Jacksonville, Florida)

A three-percent annual growth rate in electrical needs for JEA's 900-square-mile service area demands constant expansion of the utility's power system. As a part of this expansion, JEA built the 230kV/26.4kV Mt. Pleasant Substation to improve service reliability to customers on the east side of the city. The utility selected FW&A to provide comprehensive engineering services for the $4.6 million project, which included three SF6 circuit breakers in a breaker-and-a-half bus arrangement (fed by two FW&A-designed 230kV line taps) and two 50MVA transformers. The new substation feeds directly into a 26.4kV underground distribution system.

Rebuilt 115kV/12.47kV BP-3 Substation for City of Tallahassee (Tallahassee, Florida)

Once reconstruction is complete, the City of Tallahassee's existing BP-3 Substation will have six 115kV SF6 circuit breakers in a ring-bus configuration with two 30MVA transformers. FW&A provided complete engineering services for the $7 million rebuilding project, which included provision for a 115kV/12.47kV temporary substation to ensure uninterrupted service to electrical customers throughout construction. In response to flooding issues with the existing substation, FW&A designed the replacement station with significantly increased elevation (using ground-fill material).

Rebuilt 115kV C5 and Orsino Substations for NASA (Kennedy Space Center, Florida)

NASA began a massive electrical restoration of the Kennedy Space Center by rebuilding C5 and Orsino substations. FW&A designed more than $7 million in substation upgrades, including significant 115kV bus modifications and replacement of all transformers, 115kV SF6 circuit breakers and 15kV vacuum breakers. The project also included installation of a new SEL microprocessor-based relay system.
